Tilak Ali Museum

Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak — freedom fighter, journalist, and one of the early architects of Indian nationalism — was born in Ratnagiri in 1856. The Tilak Ali Museum in the town celebrates his life and legacy with photographs, writings, letters, and personal artefacts.

Tilak was a formidable figure: he was the first to call swaraj (self-rule) "my birthright," and he used the Ganesh festival and the Shivaji festival as political organizing tools before Gandhi had arrived on the scene. His newspaper, Kesari, was so effective that the British imprisoned him twice. The museum is modest but worth an hour for anyone interested in the independence movement, particularly in the less-told story of the Tilak era before Gandhi.
