The Saptamatruka shrine is a small but striking find for anyone interested in early Tantric Hinduism. It enshrines the Seven Mothers — Brahmani, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani and Chamunda — a group of fierce goddesses associated with the warrior gods, depicted side by side in a single horizontal panel. The sculpture itself, of chlorite, is generally dated to around the 10th century and is among the better-preserved Saptamatruka groups in eastern India.
The temple is more an open shed protecting the panel than a building of any architectural ambition, and you can easily miss it among the lanes near Biraja. That modesty is part of the appeal: this is local devotion, not curated heritage. Bring a small offering of flowers if you want a warmer reception from the priest, who will often happily explain each goddess's iconography.
