Ulapgarh Hill Fort

The ruined hill fort at Ulapgarh is the most substantial historical monument in the Jharsuguda district. Situated on a rocky hilltop with commanding views over the surrounding plains, the fort dates to the Sambalpur kingdom period — roughly the 16th to 19th centuries — and served as a defensive post guarding the western approaches to the region.

The walls and bastions are partially intact; the interior is largely overgrown. There is no formal access infrastructure, and the site sees few visitors, which means you will likely have it to yourself. The climb to the top takes about 30 minutes from the base and is manageable for reasonably fit walkers. The views from the ramparts over the Ib Valley coalfield and surrounding countryside give a useful sense of the geography that shaped this territory.
