Paradeep Beach

The beach at Paradip is wide and backed by casuarina trees — the feathery groves that line much of the Odisha coast. The sand is dark and fine, the sea often rough. It is not the place for swimming — the currents near the port are strong — but for walking along the water's edge and watching the activity of a working port, it is quite atmospheric.

The marine drive runs along the seafront, a pleasant place for an evening stroll. Fishing boats work the sea just beyond the port limits, and at dawn the beach sees the return of small craft from the night's fishing. The lighthouse at the port entrance is a useful landmark for orientation.

A story
Paradeep sits where the Mahanadi River meets the Bay of Bengal — a meeting of fresh and salt water that has shaped the delta landscape for millennia. The river brings silt that makes the sea murky but also creates a constantly shifting shoreline. During the cyclone season, which peaks in October and November, the Bay of Bengal is one of the world's most active storm zones, and Paradeep has been struck by major cyclones several times. The 1999 super cyclone, one of the strongest to hit Odisha in the 20th century, made landfall near here.
