Matrimandir is Auroville's central image: a huge gold disc rising out of gardens and red earth, designed as a place for silent concentration rather than a temple in the usual sense. Most day visitors see it from the viewing point reached from the visitors centre.
Access to the inner chamber is controlled and needs advance booking. Even if you only see the outside, the walk helps make sense of Auroville's layout and ambition.
