Kodai Lake

Kodai Lake is the centrepiece of the hill station, a 5 km star-shaped artificial lake sitting at the heart of town. The walk around its perimeter takes roughly an hour and passes through eucalyptus groves, viewpoints across the water, and the inevitable cluster of boat rental sheds. Hire a pedal boat or a rowboat — the water is calm and the surrounding pine-forested hills make for an easy afternoon.

Cycling around the lake is equally popular: there are bicycle hire shops along the lakeside road where you can pick up a simple bike by the hour. The circuit is flat enough to manage without much effort, and on weekday mornings before the weekend crowds arrive it is genuinely peaceful.

A story
The lake was created in 1863 when British collector Sir Vere Henry Levinge dammed a stream in the valley. The star shape — still visible from above — was apparently accidental, but it became the defining feature of the hill station and gave Kodaikanal much of its character.
