Kodaikanal International School

Kodaikanal International School — known universally as KIS — is a residential school founded in 1901 by American Protestant missionaries, and it remains one of South Asia's most respected international schools. Its campus occupies a prime position on the lakeside, with stone buildings in a vaguely Arts and Crafts colonial style spread across sloping grounds.

The school is not open to general visitors, but its campus architecture and lakeside position are a significant part of Kodaikanal's character. Many of the town's older stone buildings, including the grand façades along Fernhill Road, date from the same missionary-era building campaign. Worth walking past on a circuit of the lake.
