Shenbagavalli Amman Temple

The Shenbagavalli Amman Temple, at the town centre, is the principal shrine in Kovilpatti and the focus of community life. The presiding deity is Shenbagavalli, a form of the mother goddess, and the temple follows the southern Tamil style of compact gopurams and brightly painted figures above the entrance.

Outside festival time, the temple is quiet and worth a brief visit for a sense of small-town Tamil temple architecture. During the April festival, expect crowds, music, oil lamps, and a chariot procession that pulls the deity through the surrounding streets.

A story
The temple's nine-day annual festival around Tamil New Year is the biggest event in town, and the chariot procession on its final day blocks the main streets for hours. Villagers from across the surrounding taluk make the trip, and the town's population effectively doubles for the week.
