Kandhuri Urs Festival

The Kandhuri Urs is the annual festival at the Nagore Dargah, held during Jumada al-Thani in the Islamic calendar — which means the date shifts against the Gregorian calendar each year. The festival runs for fourteen days and is one of the largest religious gatherings in Tamil Nadu, drawing hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from across south India and Sri Lanka.

The centrepiece is a procession from the nearby town of Nagapattinam to Nagore, carrying ceremonial floats and the characteristic flags and banners associated with dargah festivals across the subcontinent. The procession arrives at the dargah for ceremonies at the tomb. If you are in the region when the festival is on, the scale and energy of the event is well worth witnessing — though accommodation in both Nagore and Nagapattinam will be full.

A story
The procession that climaxes the Kandhuri Urs festival — floats, flags, and a large crowd moving from Nagapattinam to Nagore — happens at night, when the coastal road is lit with torches and lanterns. The procession arrives at the dargah in the early hours of the morning for a ceremony at the saint's tomb. The entire event runs for fourteen days across the Islamic month of Jumada al-Thani.
