Nagore Naganathaswamy Temple

The Naganathaswamy Temple is an ancient Shaiva temple in Nagore, dedicated to Shiva as the Lord of Serpents. The complex is smaller than the dargah but has a long history and a fine gopuram (gateway tower) that marks the entrance. The tank in front of the temple is used for ritual bathing on auspicious occasions.

For visitors exploring the religious geography of the Cauvery delta region, the proximity of this Hindu temple to one of Tamil Nadu's most important Muslim shrines — within the same small town — illustrates the long tradition of religious coexistence that has characterised this part of south India. Both sites draw pilgrims from the same communities.

A story
The Naganathaswamy Temple is dedicated to Shiva in his serpent-lord form — Naga, the cosmic serpent — which is unusually prominent in this coastal stretch of Tamil Nadu. The Cauvery delta has a long tradition of naga worship, connected to the serpent's role in Hindu cosmology as the guardian of water sources and the depths of the earth.
