Rock Beach Promenade

The Rock Beach promenade — officially Goubert Salai — runs for about 1.5 km along the Bay of Bengal at the eastern edge of the French Quarter. It is one of the few seafront promenades in south India that genuinely invites walking: broad, paved, and bordered by the sea on one side and colonial buildings on the other. The Gandhi statue at the northern end is a landmark, and the old lighthouse nearby still functions.

The beach here is not suitable for swimming — the current is strong and the shore is rocky — but the promenade is the place to be at dawn and dusk. Early morning brings a steady parade of joggers, yoga practitioners, and elderly couples; the coffee-and-bajji vendors set up before six. At the southern end, the French war memorial and the colonnaded Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall) give the seafront a genuinely civic feel unlike anything else in Tamil Nadu.
