Ramanathapuram Town Tank

The large tank in Ramanathapuram town centre is a traditional South Indian irrigation and ritual tank built under the Sethupati dynasty. In the early morning, the tank serves as a bathing ghat for local residents, and the ghats on the tank's edge are lined with small shrines. The setting is typical of Tamil Nadu's old market towns — practical, social, and quietly sacred.

The tank is surrounded by streets of old houses and small shops, and a walk around its perimeter gives the best sense of the old town's layout. The light over the water at dawn and dusk is good for photography. Like most temple tanks in Tamil Nadu, it is fed partly by canal and partly by rainwater collection.
