Sugavaneswarar Temple

Sugavaneswarar Temple is the principal Hindu temple in Salem, a working Shaivite shrine in the centre of the city dedicated to Shiva and his consort. The gopuram (tower) is the most visible religious landmark in the city. The temple sees a constant stream of local worshippers rather than tourist crowds, which makes it a more genuine experience than the more famous pilgrimage temples elsewhere in Tamil Nadu.

The inner sanctum is decorated in the Dravidian style, with elaborate carvings on the mandapa columns. Non-Hindu visitors are generally welcome in the outer precincts. Remove shoes before entering. The temple is liveliest in the early mornings and evenings during puja; the evening ceremony, with lamps and incense, is worth timing your visit around.

A story
The presiding deity here is Shiva as Sugavaneswarar, "lord who bestows happiness," while the goddess is known as Sivakami. The temple tank, now much reduced, once extended across a large area of central Salem — the city grew around and over it, leaving only the temple complex intact.
