Mookaneri Lake

Mookaneri Lake, also called Kannankurichi Lake, is a 23-hectare freshwater lake on the northern edge of Salem. The surrounding park has walking paths and is popular with local families in the early mornings and evenings — a reasonable place to stretch your legs if you have time between connections.

The lake is decent birdwatching territory, particularly in the cooler months when migratory birds pass through. Herons and egrets are present year-round. The walk around the perimeter takes 30–40 minutes at a comfortable pace.

A story
The lake was historically maintained as a tank — an irrigation reservoir — and is still fed by monsoon runoff from the surrounding hills. In recent years it has been developed as a public park with walkways and evening lighting, transforming a working water body into one of the few green spaces in an otherwise densely built city.
