Jambukeswarar Temple

Jambukeswarar Temple stands at Thiruvanaikaval, close to Srirangam but with a quieter, more inward atmosphere. The temple is dedicated to Shiva and Akhilandeswari, and its stone corridors and gopurams reward slow looking.

Visit it together with Srirangam, but do not treat it as an afterthought. The architecture is serious, the ritual life is active, and the temple's water symbolism gives it a different mood from Trichy's more exposed Rockfort.

A story
Jambukeswarar is associated with water among the five elemental Shiva temples of Tamil Nadu. The sanctum is traditionally said to have an underground stream, a small but powerful detail in a hot river city.
