Rockfort

Rockfort is Trichy's signature landmark, a temple-crowned mass of stone rising suddenly above the old city. The climb is by a long flight of steps cut into the rock, passing the Thayumanaswamy Temple before reaching the Ucchi Pillayar shrine at the top.

The reward is the view: the Kaveri and Kollidam rivers, Srirangam's temple towers, and the city spreading below. Go early morning or near sunset; midday heat on the stone can be brutal.

A story
The rock itself is far older than the temples on it: geologists date it to the Precambrian, hundreds of millions of years before the Himalayas rose. Trichy has built dynasties, shrines, and traffic around a stone outcrop that was ancient before India had its present shape.
