Gaurikund to Kedarnath Trek

The 16-kilometre climb from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is the way most pilgrims reach the shrine. The trail rises from about 2,000 m at Gaurikund to 3,583 m at the temple, gaining altitude through forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine before opening into alpine meadow.

The path was substantially rebuilt after the 2013 floods and is now a wide stone-paved track with handrails on the worst sections, regular tea stalls, and shelters. Most pilgrims allow six to eight hours one way. Ponies, palanquins (kandi or doli), and a helicopter service from Phata operate for those who cannot or do not want to walk.
