Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi

A modern memorial directly behind the main Kedarnath temple, marking the place where Adi Shankaracharya is said to have attained samadhi. The 12-foot bronze statue and the small underground meditation hall were inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in 2021.

The samadhi is one of the few additions to the Kedarnath site after the 2013 floods. The complex is open to visitors during temple hours and is a quieter spot to sit than the busy main shrine.

A story
Adi Shankaracharya, the eighth-century philosopher credited with reorganising Hindu monasticism, is said to have attained mahasamadhi at the age of 32 here in Kedarnath after consolidating the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. The current memorial was built in 2021 after the 2013 floods destroyed an earlier shrine.
