Narendra Nagar

The former royal capital of the Tehri kingdom, perched on a ridge with views over the Ganges valley and Himalayan peaks

Narendra Nagar sits on a ridge above the Ganges valley about 16 km north of Rishikesh, at an elevation of around 1,100 metres. The town was built in the 1920s as the planned capital of the Tehri Garhwal princely state and retains several heritage buildings from that era, including the former maharaja's palace (now the Ananda spa resort) with views across the valley to the distant peaks.

The setting is exceptional: clear days give views southward down the Ganges towards the plains and northward towards the Garhwal peaks. The town itself is small and quiet, serving primarily as a stop on the route north from Rishikesh into the mountains. The bazaar area has basic accommodation and food.

The drive from Rishikesh to Narendra Nagar takes about 30 minutes by car, climbing through forest on a winding road with river views. It can be combined with a visit to Rishikesh — or used as a quieter, cooler alternative to staying in Rishikesh itself.

A story
Narendra Nagar was the capital of the Tehri Garhwal princely state, one of the last princely states to accede to India after independence in 1947. The royal palace — now the Ananda spa resort — overlooks the Ganges valley from an elevation of about 1,000m. The Maharaja's decision to develop it as a luxury resort rather than let it decay is one of the more creative outcomes of Indian post-independence accommodation.
