Lake Zarivar, near the city of Marivan about 100 km southwest of Sanandaj, is one of the most beautiful lakes in western Iran. At 1,285 metres elevation, the lake is a freshwater wetland surrounded by reeds, willows, and the oak forest typical of the Zagros mountains. Migrating birds use it as a rest stop, and the birdlife — herons, pelicans, ducks, and wading birds — is exceptional in spring and autumn.
The lake itself is unusual in that it is fed by underground springs rather than a river, which keeps the water clear and relatively calm. The approach road from Marivan passes through stepped Kurdish villages and mountain scenery that is among the finest in Iran.
The drive from Sanandaj to Marivan takes about two hours on a good road. The lake is best visited in spring (April–May) when the surrounding hills are green and the migratory birds are present, or in autumn. Several local restaurants and teahouses operate near the lake shore during the tourist season.
