Canada Centre

The Canada Centre is Metula's most famous feature — a full-sized Olympic ice-skating rink operating year-round in a town surrounded by the sun-baked hills of the upper Galilee. It is improbable and slightly surreal, and also genuinely popular: Israeli school groups, hockey teams, and figure skaters from across the country make the trip north to use it.

Visitors can skate on open sessions (skate hire available) or watch hockey practice if a session is underway. The centre also has a swimming pool and sports courts. It is the main reason most non-pilgrimage visitors come to Metula, and if you have children, it is an easy half-day outing.

A story
The Canada Centre was built in 1986 with funding from Canadian Jewish philanthropist Seagram heir Charles Bronfman, who wanted to give the isolated northern border town a world-class sports facility. The ice rink operates year-round and has produced several Israeli national hockey players — an improbable sentence in any context.
