Okamoto and Otaki Shrine is the spiritual centre of Echizen's paper country. It is dedicated to Kawakami Gozen, the paper-making deity said to have taught the craft to local people, and the lower shrine building is valued for its elaborate late Edo-period carpentry.
The shrine makes the washi story feel older and stranger than a museum display. It is especially meaningful if you pair it with Echizen Washi Village, just nearby.
