Shosenkyo Gorge

Granite gorge north of Kofu, with waterfalls, autumn colour, and a ropeway above the cliffs.

Shosenkyo is Kofu's best natural escape: a narrow granite gorge where the road and walking path follow cliffs, odd rock formations, and waterfalls into the hills north of the city. It is especially good in autumn, when the maples give the grey stone some colour.

The walk between Nagatoro Bridge and the upper gorge is straightforward, and the ropeway adds a wider view if the weather is clear. Allow a half day rather than treating it as a quick city sight.
