Shibata Castle

Reconstructed and surviving castle buildings around original moats, known for a rare three-shachihoko roof.

Shibata Castle was begun in the late 16th century and became the centre of the Mizoguchi clan's domain. The main gate and Ninomaru corner turret are original important cultural properties, while the restored three-storey turret is unusual for its T-shaped roof with three shachihoko ornaments.

Part of the castle area is still tied to Japan's Self-Defense Forces, so the visit is more about gates, moats, walls, and exterior views than wandering a complete castle complex. It is especially pretty when cherry blossoms and lanterns reflect in the water.
