Kunozan Toshogu is the first Toshogu shrine, built for Tokugawa Ieyasu after his death and later treated as the model for the more famous shrine at Nikko. The buildings are lacquered, carved, and brightly painted, but the setting is just as important: the shrine clings to the slope above Suruga Bay.
The dramatic approach is up the 1,159 stone steps from the coast. The easier route is by ropeway from Nihondaira, which also makes it simple to combine the shrine with the plateau viewpoints.
