Gohyaku-rakan

Gohyaku-rakan, the "Hills of 500 Buddhas", is a hillside of weathered Buddhist disciple statues near Toyama Folk Village. From a distance it looks modest, but up close the statues gather around the small temple in a dense, atmospheric group.

The site is best treated as a quiet side trip from central Toyama. Look for the individual faces, robes, and ribbons on the figures; the appeal is in the slow discovery rather than a single grand monument.
