Seihakuji

Zen temple founded in the 14th century, with a Buddhist hall designated a National Treasure.

Seihakuji is Yamanashi's most important historic sight. The Zen temple was founded in the 14th century, and its butsuden, or Buddhist hall, is protected as a National Treasure of Japan.

The visit is quiet and small-scale, which suits the place. Come for the old timber architecture and the sense of how much medieval religious history survives in the orchard country outside Kōfu.
