The former Bank of Japan branch is one of the clearest signs of how wealthy Otaru became in its port years. The building was completed in 1912, when the city was a serious commercial centre for Hokkaido.
Inside, the museum explains the bank's work and Otaru's financial history. Even if money history is not your thing, the building fits neatly into a walk through the old business district near the canal.
