Otaru Canal

Restored canal lined with stone warehouses, gas lamps, and waterside paths.

Otaru Canal is the city's signature walk. Built in 1923 to move goods between ships and warehouses, it has been kept as a waterside promenade with stone storehouses, lamps, and low bridges.

It is pleasant by day and better after dark, when the lamps and warehouse lights reflect in the water. The canal also makes the easiest starting point for exploring Otaru's old commercial district.
