North Breakwater Dome

Long arched concrete breakwater built for the old Wakkanai-Sakhalin ferry route.

The North Breakwater Dome is Wakkanai's most distinctive built sight: a 427-metre concrete arcade along the port, raised on seventy columns and designed to shield passengers and freight from violent northern weather.

It was tied to the old sea connection with Karafuto, when southern Sakhalin was under Japanese rule. Today the ferry history is gone, but the structure remains, oddly Roman in form and completely northern in mood.
