Ryotan-ji is a calm temple on the Sawayama side of Hikone, away from the heavier visitor flow around the castle. It is associated with the Ii clan and has the sort of composed garden spaces that reward slow looking rather than quick photography.
The temple is a good addition if you are exploring Hikone beyond its famous keep. Pair it with Sawayama Castle ruins or a wider walk through the northern side of town, and give yourself enough time for the quiet to do its work.
