Kumano Hongu Taisha is one of the great shrines of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes. Set in the mountains and linked to a huge torii gate at Oyunohara, it is a core stop for understanding the spiritual geography of the Kii Peninsula rather than just another rural shrine.
