Maruyama Senmaida

Hillside of hand-tended terraced rice fields in inland Kumano.

Maruyama Senmaida is a slope of terraced rice fields in Kumano's inland hills. The name means "one thousand rice fields", and the terraces fold around the hillside in small, irregular steps that machinery cannot easily handle.

It is a landscape sight rather than a monument. Go for the view, but also for the reminder that the old countryside survived here because people kept showing up to plant, repair, and harvest fields that would be far easier to abandon.
