Shishiiwa is Kumano's famous lion rock, a natural formation beside the beach that looks uncannily like a lion's head facing the sea. It is an easy stop from Kumanoshi Station and works best with a slow walk along the coast.
The sight is simple, but not slight. Together with Hana no Iwaya and Onigajo, it gives Kumano a coastline where geology, folklore, and shrine culture sit almost on top of one another.
