Turkish Memorial and Museum

Oshima Island memorial to the Ottoman frigate Ertugrul and the local rescue effort after its wreck.

The Turkish Memorial and Museum stands near the rocks where the Ottoman frigate Ertugrul was wrecked in a typhoon in 1890. Local villagers rescued survivors and cared for the dead, and the story became one of the emotional foundations of Japan's friendship with Turkey.

The museum is modest, but the setting gives it weight. Pair it with Kashinozaki Lighthouse and the views from the eastern end of Oshima Island.
