Gojoban Yashiki is a rare surviving row of Edo-period samurai residences, built for guards serving the castle. The long, low houses and hedged lane make one of Matsusaka's most atmospheric walks, especially because part of the row is still lived in.
One residence is usually open to visitors. It is plain rather than lavish, which is the point: this was the ordered daily world below the castle, not a lord's palace.
