Nakadake Crater

Active volcanic crater where visitors may see steam, gas, and pale crater water when access is open.

Nakadake is the volatile heart of Mount Aso. When conditions allow, the road brings visitors close to a crater of smoke, sulphur, pale water, and raw volcanic rock. It is one of Japan's most direct volcano experiences, but it is not guaranteed.

Check access before setting out. Gas levels, wind, weather, and volcanic activity can close the crater area with little romance and no negotiation. If you have asthma or heart trouble, take the warnings seriously.
