Onta Pottery Village sits in the hills north of Hita and has made Onta-yaki ware since the early 18th century. This is not a display village built for tour buses. Workshops, kilns, drying shelves, and water-powered kara-usu hammers are part of the working landscape.
The pottery is practical and earthy, known for repeated geometric marks and the discipline of a small craft community. Some workshops sell directly, but the pleasure is as much in hearing the wooden hammers knock clay beside the stream as in buying a bowl.
