Ama-no-Iwato Shrine gives Takachiho its mythic weight. It protects the cave where, in Shinto tradition, the sun goddess Amaterasu hid, leaving the world in darkness until she was lured out.
The cave itself is too sacred to enter, but the river valley, observation area, and stone-stacked paths make the visit feel more than symbolic. Pair it with the gorge to understand why Takachiho draws so many Japanese visitors despite its remote mountain setting.
