Takeo Shrine is a calm stop near the onsen area, but most visitors remember the tree more than the buildings. The sacred camphor behind the shrine is vast, hollowed, and old enough to make ordinary sightseeing chatter fade out.
Go early or late if you can. The shrine grounds are modest, and the short walk to the camphor is better when it is quiet.
