Mount Miyanoura

Mount Miyanoura is the highest summit in Kyushu at 1,936 metres, rising steeply from the forested interior of Yakushima. The ascent is typically combined with neighbouring peaks Nagata-dake and Kuromi-dake on a traverse of the island's high ridge. Most hikers approach from Yodogawa trailhead (reached by bus from Miyanoura port) and complete the circuit in a long day or over two days with a night at the Shintakatsubo refuge hut.

The vegetation changes dramatically with altitude. The lower slopes are dense laurel forest; higher up, the forest opens to dwarf bamboo and scrubby yakusugi cedars twisted by the wind; the summit itself is bare granite, with views to the sea on clear days. Cloud and mist are frequent, and the weather changes rapidly — pack rain gear regardless of the forecast. The traverse route is demanding but well-marked with mountain huts at strategic intervals.

A story
At 1,936 metres, Mount Miyanoura is the highest peak in Kyushu — a fact that surprises many visitors who think of Kyushu as a lowland island. The summit is above the treeline on granite boulders, and on clear days the view extends south across open ocean toward Tanegashima, the island from which Japan launched its first rockets.
