Ohko Falls

Ohko Falls, on the south coast of Yakushima, drops 88 metres directly into the sea — a dramatic cascade that is one of the most visually distinctive sights on the island. Unlike most of Yakushima's attractions, which require hiking into the forest interior, Ohko Falls is easily reached by car or bus, with a short walk from the road to the viewing area at the base. When rainfall has been heavy, which is often, the falls are at their most spectacular.

The surrounding area has some excellent swimming and snorkelling spots along the rocky coastline. The south coast road in general offers a different character to the forested mountain routes — clearer skies, warmer temperatures, and views across to the smaller offshore islands. Ohko Falls is often combined with a visit to the turtle nesting beaches at Inakahama, a few kilometres along the coast.
