Yakusugi Land is a managed forest park in the lower mountains of Yakushima, set up specifically to give visitors access to ancient cedar trees without undertaking the full-day hike to Jōmon Sugi. Four trail loops of varying length wind through forest where thousand-year-old yakusugi cedars stand amid younger trees, streams, and moss-covered rocks. The shortest loop takes about 30 minutes; the longest is around 150 minutes.
The trees here are smaller than Jōmon Sugi but far more numerous, and the forest has a wilder, less managed quality than the boardwalk approach to the famous tree. This is also the main shuttle bus staging point for the Arakawa trailhead used by Jōmon Sugi hikers — most people stop here to catch the bus. Allow extra time if you want to walk any of the loops before continuing. Entry costs a small fee; the park is open year-round but the shuttle bus schedule varies by season.
