Kuroshima Research Centre

The Kuroshima Research Centre is a small marine research and turtle rehabilitation facility that serves as the island's main visitor attraction outside of the beaches. The centre has displays on the island's ecology, the sea turtle nesting programme, and the coral reef ecosystem, with an aquarium section holding live turtles and reef fish.

The centre is worth an hour, particularly for visitors arriving outside turtle nesting season who want to understand the island's ecological significance. Staff speak some English and can provide information about turtle-watching tours and beach access rules during the nesting season. The centre also sells the island's Yaeyama beef products — the cattle on Kuroshima are a heritage breed and the beef is prized in Japan.

A story
The centre's aquarium tanks contain sea turtles that were found injured or washed ashore around the Yaeyama islands. Staff nurse them back to health before releasing them at sea — a process that can take months. Visitors can watch the feeding, which happens at set times daily, and observe the turtles from above through glass viewing panels.
