Shikinaen Garden

Ryukyu royal villa garden in Naha, blending Japanese circuit-garden design with Chinese details

Shikinaen was the second residence of the Ryukyu royal family, built as a place to receive Chinese envoys and escape the formality of Shuri Castle. The garden circles a pond and uses Okinawan red-tile architecture, coral limestone, bridges, and borrowed views in a style that feels neither purely Japanese nor purely Chinese.

It is one of Naha's most rewarding quiet sights. The reconstructed palace buildings are simple but graceful, and the garden is best enjoyed slowly, following the path around the water and letting the small shifts in view do their work. Pair it with Shuri if you want to understand the old kingdom beyond castle walls.
