Makishi Public Market occupies a covered arcade off Kokusai Street. The ground floor is the fresh market: stalls of tropical fish with an Okinawan angle (parrotfish, sea snakes, moray eels), vegetables unfamiliar to mainland Japan (bitter melon, papaya, sea grapes), and the pork products for which Okinawan cuisine is famous. Buy something downstairs and take it to one of the restaurants on the upper floor, who will cook it for a small fee.
The market is most alive in the mornings. By early afternoon some stalls are packing up. The upper floor has straightforward Okinawan set-meal restaurants that are good value and popular with local workers — try the champuru (stir-fry) or the soki soba (pork rib noodle soup). The whole building was renovated in 2023 and is now more orderly than it was, though the essential character remains.
