Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

The Churaumi Aquarium sits within Ocean Expo Park on the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa, overlooking Nakijin Bay. It is one of the largest aquariums on earth and genuinely earns its reputation. The centrepiece is the vast Kuroshio Tank, where whale sharks share space with manta rays and hundreds of other species in a volume of water large enough to feel oceanic. The acrylic viewing panel is large enough to sit beside for an extended period without seeing the same fish twice.

Beyond the main tank, the aquarium moves through progressively deeper zones: coral reefs alive with anthias and butterflyfish, then the middle water column, then the twilight depths where bioluminescent creatures drift past darkened glass. The outdoor pools hold sea turtles and dolphins, with feeding demonstrations several times daily. Allow at least three hours; the crowds thin considerably in the late afternoon. The park surrounding the aquarium includes native tropical gardens and a reconstructed Ryukyuan village.

A story
The Kuroshio Tank, opened in 2002, was the largest aquarium tank in the world at the time and remains one of the biggest. Its acrylic viewing panel — 8.2 metres tall and 22.5 metres wide — is thick enough to withstand the pressure of 7,500 cubic metres of seawater and three whale sharks gliding unhurriedly overhead.
