Okinawa World is a theme park complex in Nanjo that bundles together several worthwhile things under one roof: Gyokusendo Cave, a reconstructed Ryukyuan village of traditional thatched buildings with craft demonstrations, a habu snake museum and show, and Ryukyu glass workshops where visitors can try glass blowing. The combination is uneven — the cave is genuinely spectacular, the village is interesting, and the habu show is educational if you have any interest in venomous snakes — but the complex works as a full half-day activity, particularly for families.
The craft demonstrations cover bingata fabric dyeing, pottery, weaving, and glasswork, with short paid workshops available for most. The Ryukyu glass style, characterised by thick walls and embedded air bubbles in vivid colours, originated from American soda bottles left after the war and evolved into one of Okinawa's most recognisable craft traditions. The workshops are hands-on and the results are your own to take home.
