Taketomi Island is small enough that a bicycle tour of its main sights takes less than two hours. The appeal is in slowing down: cycling sandy lanes past coral-stone walls, swimming at beaches with exceptional clarity, and watching water buffalo move through a village that looks much as it did a century ago.
