Nora-dokei

Field clock built so farmers could tell the time from the surrounding fields.

Nora-dokei means "field clock", and that is exactly what it was: a clock tower built high enough for farm workers to see from the fields. The story is wonderfully local. Hatakenaka Genma, fascinated by clockwork, taught himself the mechanism by taking apart and rebuilding an imported clock.

The clock is now Aki's small symbol, especially photogenic when seasonal flowers are blooming in front of it.
